Hi,
I'm thinking of initiating a similar concept to OpenIdeas in Ottawa, Canada. There are a few differences that I think will help get this concept into the mainstream. As I'm sure you have discovered, many people are very protective of their "idea" and are not really ready for openess. Especially at first. Until they discover that a good idea takes a lot of work and refinement to turn into something real. So, we are considering leaving the control of the openess, up to the initiator to manage. Of course, they will get the most input and support by being open. Another difference would be that the ownership of the root idea will remain with the initiator. I think this element is aligned to the overall goal of the version being proposed for Ottawa. Good ideas are OK but only start to make a difference if they go somewhere. We propose that the OpenIdeas concept feed into a related program that helps technology based startups go from idea to revenue. This is the "lead to win" program. By feeding into a company (and hence job creating) program, we have other opportunities to gain funding from other organizations. Our output is directly measurable. I'm a bit worried that our approach to IP ownership is in direct conflict with the principles of open source. But it is not obvious how things could work otherwise.

It would be nice to have an "off-topic" section of discussions related to each idea. This is because I might have a stupid question regarding the idea and I don't want to interrupt the flow of the contributions.
A place where you could brainstorm - discuss, chat, ask questions and get answers before getting serious (posting a actual contribution)
That way you minimize the amount of information and focus it on the great ideas, rather on chit-chat.

lol, like 90% of your points we discussed and they are on the to-do list already. And yes, the visualisation of the idea and where it goes to is a good idea. I guess that will be a lot of work.
I could imagine a time-line with milestones on it. Like there is a Startpoint with the first idea.Explenation to the grafic:
At the beginning is the Idea (butterfly). If you klick on it you can read the first version of the idea.
Then you have the first Contribution (the bulp). You can see when it was posted and when you klick on it you can read this Contribution.
The Second butterfly on the timeline would be the new, remodeled or added idea. Also readable when you klick on it.Of corse this all has to be done by a graficguy. But i guess this is a nice idea because you can compair the new version of the idea with the first version and also see all the contributions and how they interacted with the progress of the idea.

1) if my login attempt fails i'm being redirected to the start page. i'd like to try it with the correct password again .. so please no redirect
2) the Pages list gets kinda lost, needs more highlighting
3) explore ideas is nice.. but how do i get back to the start page with the nice listing? ... took me 2 mins to find out to just click on the icon (exaggerated but you get the point)
4) brainstorming tool + versioning would be cool.. so people can spin the idea further in the brainstorming.... + a hard copy of current brainstorming snapshot in the contribution start list would be nice
5) make contributions rate-able... like in digg... "like contribution... don't like... +/-) .. so when people start contributing a lot you can sort it by nr of + etc. so just the important stuff shows up (optionally just display the chronological order just right now)
6) PLEASE PLEASE make a layout... there is no layout at all... you can't reckognize which parts of the site belongs together etc.
7) get someone who knows gfx'ing on board and improve the icons
8) the start page looks a bit messy... remove stuff thats not necessary... like make a separate page (maybe blog?) for News about openideas. where you can tell people about changes and promote stuff etc.
9) please don't make me upload my picture to gravatar. i don't want to but still like to be able to have a profile picture
10) if there is a url, make it click-able ..
nice changes with the Pages thing.. . like it...

kann man bei den google maps, diese nadel verschieben? oder taucht die nur dort auf wo ich gerade mit meinem laptop sitze. wär super, wenn ich zb in eisenstadt sitze und eine idee für kärnten hab.

Wenn ich unter Change Profile gehe, etwas ändere und dann auf "Save Profile" klicke passiert gar nichts. bzw. es bleibt das gleich bild. Vielleicht kleine Nachricht einfügen "Profil wurde geändert"
Unter My Profile, wozu soll ich mir selber eine Nachricht schicken können? Und wenn ich es mache, bekomm ich auf mein eMail Account ein Email von Michael Schwanzer,....hmmmm
Und warum gibt es kein internes Postfach für registrierte User.Unter "About" : because you need help at a some challenging project --> letzter Satz von Scenario. Dieser englische Satz macht keinen sinn, vor allem das A. help with some challenging...?

at the start page "recent ideas" and "popular ideas" there is still no date/time information!!!! i want to see when the idea was being created when its in the "most recent" category. i'd also like to see when the last contribution was done in that list

what about a collaborative to-do list?
so that everybody can add things that he thinks need to get done, and whoever feels like he can and is willing to do the task can "take over responsibility"...
tasks should be marked "open", "in progress" or "finished"; additional information for each task: who contributed it, who took over responsibility (if anyone did), deadline, progress in percent (?) and by clicking on the task a detail view could even show something like a more detailed description, an activity report for this task, files /pictures uploaded for this task etc., etc.
export to excel would be nice as well :)
btw: maybe its possible to just add a google-spreadsheet-widget with a to-do list pattern on it?....posted by

Oh yeah - I just uploaded a local copy of openideas to the server and it almost worked directly (haha).

- i find it a bit irritating that the idea list on the start page and the list on a user's profile are 2 different lists (tags only on user's profile, different way of displaying number of contributions/members)

- on the start page the google maps iframe text spills over the idea to the left of it

- allow me to edit my contribution 5 mins after i posted it
- use more than 50% of the browser window's width! i have a 22" widescreen and openideas just uses 50% of the possible size... either increase that usage or design all the stuff so it fits in the 50% (especially activity feed and the user message "Hi there Paul, how are you today? You can update your profile or logout " should fit into 1 line
- in the idea-details site highlight different parts (general description, benefit, additional information, contributions) with different background colours
- add some nice icons to those sections
- move the contributors list in top of the contributions list... or at least after the benefit... benefit is more important than contributors listposted by

- replace those very ugly turquoise squared buttons with something more web 2.0
- when i go to the start page i wanna see when the last activity in each idea has happened
- activity feed layout is not very nice
- finally fix the overflow issue when pictures are in contributions / idea blocks and are bigger than the box
- resize the big flower power START stuff to something smaller... its just too big (on my 22" screen its like 75% of the browser window's size
- make the idea list items boxes react on :hover
- change colour of the links in the idea list items thing.. if i don't hover it i wouldn't know that i can click on it... or just implement the described above
- in the contributions list make the user icon link to the user page. same for the Posted by USERposted by

if you are logged in via facebook connect you can now invite you friends to any idea with a multiple friend select form on every ideas infopage...

If you follow the navigational link to the dashboard, it opens a site called "Desktop" ;).. needs to change :)

openideas_tweet gets kinda spammy - now already!! ... i think this has to be dealt in some way, but i don't have a solution yet unfortunately, other than unfollowing, but that's something i'd rather not do, because it comes in quite handy!! =)

- make names + picture of the contributions' contributer as hyperlinks to user

I would change the title from "Desktop" to somthing like "Cockpit" or "Home" or "myOpenideas" or "Start" .... IMHO Desktop is too much bound with windows and double-clicking !

gehen mir grad ziemlich viele themen zur open source plattform mit der wir arbeiten durch den kopf... wie wäre es wenn man subdomains.. eigene projekte.. unter openideas hätte.. also spaces in denen du ideen zu einem bestimmten thema hast... genauso wie openideas jetzt ist, nur halt eben zu einem bestimmten themenbereich... und wenn du eine idee gut findest, dann kannst du nicht nur dazu beisteuern.. sondern auch dafür voten... beisteuern/voten macht diese idee populärer in einem ranking oder so

Facebook Connect is now integrated but still very beta:
Kown Bug:
If you are logged in to facebook.com -> Cookie is set - you cant use FB connect to log in to openideasthats the most important case I know - but the authorisation with the Fb.signature is not very sophisticated with the rails facebook plugin i use.
