Happy Hour Database

created by Avatar Martin Tocauer about 1 year ago

The goal would be to build up a site based on a database where actual happy-hours in bars, cafe`s, restaurants etc. are recorded.
This database could be used as basis for a webpage, an I-Phone app, android app.

The Benefit

A perfect planing-tool to get drunk very cheap.

  • nice idea!

I think it should be kept simple.
    1) which information do we need for it?
    *where is the bar?
*where am I / are we
*when does it have its happy hour?
*is the information up to date (bars tend to change their marketing campaingns)

    2) how to get this data (information)
*parsing search results (good as a start, when there ar no personal entries at all)
*personal entries into the DB through a very simple mask (for registered users)
    *?

    3) how to keep the data up to date
    * personal entries and deletion if service is out of date
    * by comparing past search results with newer ones

    all this functions should be available through mobile services, and they should not be for free but for a very low price; registration fee "one" euro; this is not to earn money but to keep persons that just submit wrong data out;

I know that no one posted to this idea for one year, but maybe now is the time to start it!!!

If there is interest in it I could contribute my knowledge about complex systems analysis and problems solution.

    best,
    michael

  • Through GPS - Coordinates and the time of those Happy Hours it is able to calculate the optimal route from one pub/bar/... to the next Happy-Hour-Location. So you have the shortest way and the exact times, when you have to go to the further locations.
Maybe adding locations of cigarette vending machine, ATMs or snack stalls.
Information could be collected through a web-spider, but i think it's not as dynamic and effective as adding information to the database collcetively.

  • GPS - Coordinates of the locations should be stored to accomplish proximity searches in the mobile application

  • you could import the results into a seperate "to confirm" area in the database, for moderation purposes for example.

  • sounds more reasonable, but maybe that's too much a game of luck ... not sure tough, needs some research i guess.

  • IMHO, parsing is not a bad idea. Maybe parsing google search results ?

  • regarding website parsing: i don't think it makes sense to write even just one parser!

most bars don't have their happy hour times online anyway, and you'd have to write a custom parser for every bar/website, just entering the information manually probably is a 100-10000 times faster and less error prone anyway =)

  • that is nice idea - you could bring in a parser that looks for "happy hour" on bars webpages to find them easily and put them into the database -> with user validation of course to keep high quality in the DB.

and the bars show up on a google map as well =)

  • the site should also have a google-maps interface for mobile applications.

Main target should be the mobile application.
